My son Patrick has had the good fortune to spend the month of July living in the Chateau of Montreal. He has an internship there through the French Heritage Society (FHS). FHS is an American tax-exempt organization dedicated to the preservation, restoration and promotion of French heritage throughout the United States and France. The Château of Montréal is a beneficiary of this mission.

The château is located in the historic Perigord region just outside the charming village of Issac. It sits on top of a hill overlooking the Crempse Valley. It was built in the 12th century but was mostly destroyed in the 100 years' war. It was rebuilt in the 16th century, and is a private residence, owned and occupied by the Faubournet de Montferrand family.

The château and its gardens are open to the public in the summer. Patrick greets visiters to the chateau and gives tours in French and English. Last week I visited him at the chateau. I met the owners, AMB and Mrs. de Montferrand, and was invited to join them and the other intern for a delightful dinner in the garden. The view of the valley was spectacular and when the sun set, the colors of the sky were truly magnificent.

An interesting historical note: When Claude de Pontbriant, Seigneur of Montreal who rebuilt the chateau in the XVIth century, was on a discovery voyage to the New World with Jacques Cartier, he renamed an Indian settlement Montreal after his chateau. This settlement is now the second largest French city in the world!
