Depuis longtemps j’ai voulu visiter le Musée de la Vie romantique. Une amie m’a dit que c’est son musée préféré de tout Paris. Donc je dois le visiter. Enfin hier j'y suis allée. Le musée est situé sur les contreforts de la butte Montmartre dans le 9e arrondissement. C’est un hôtel particulier de 1830 qui était la maison d’Ary Scheffer, une artiste d’origine néerlandaise. L’hôtel particulier est le style italien est en face sont deux ateliers d’artistes, une serre, un petit jardin et une cour de pavé rond. On entre le musée pars un passage étroit, bordé des arbres vertes. En arrivant dans la cour, on pense qu’on est dans une petite village au campagne, pas dans la cœur de Paris. C’est comme une oasis !
For a long time, I’ve wanted to visit the Museum of the Romantics (or literally the romantic life). A friend told me it’s her favorite museum in Paris. That's high praise indeed for a city that is home to over 300 museums (according to World Cities Culture Forum), so I put it on my list of “must-see’s.” And yesterday I went. I would not say it’s my favorite museum in Paris, but it certainly makes for a delightful afternoon. The museum is located at the foot of Montmartre in the 9th arrondissement. It was the home of Dutch-born artist Ary Scheffer, who built the Italian-style house in 1830. Opposite the main house are two artist’s studios, a greenhouse, small garden and cobblestone courtyard. One enters the museum through a narrow, cobblestone passage, lined by leafy trees and ivy-covered walls. Upon entering the courtyard, you think you are in a small country village, not the heart of Paris. It’s like an oasis!

L’artiste Ary Scheffer est inconnu à moi. Mais il était portraitiste très en vogue de son époque et aussi un ami du Roi Louis-Philippe et sa famille. Durant trente ans, Scheffer accueille dans sa maison tout le Paris artiste et intellectuel de son époque, notamment George Sand, Chopin, Liszt, Delacroix et Rossini. Aujourd’hui, la maison de Scheffer est devenue un musée encore trop méconnu, consacré au mouvement romantique.
I didn’t know the artist Ary Scheffer. Apparently, he was a very well-known portraitist and a good friend of King Louis-Philippe and his family. For 30 years, Scheffer hosted weekly salons in his home, welcoming the crème de la crème of Parisian intellectual and artistic society, including George Sand, Chopin, Liszt, Delacroix and Rossini. His home was a true source of inspiration for Romanticism in Paris. That it houses today a museum dedicated to the Romantic movement is fitting indeed.

Dans le collection du musée on trouve les peintures de Scheffer principalement, d'Eugene Delacroix et autre artistes de cette époque moins connu. Franchement, l’art de cette époque ne m’intéresse pas beaucoup. Ce qui m’intéresse plus est les choses et peintures de George Sand, une bonne amie de Scheffer qui a visité sa maison souvent. De les huit pièces du musée, trois comprennent les souvenirs, peintures et meubles de Sand, notamment des bijoux de sa famille, les portraits de ses ancêtres, et les plumes et coupe-papier de cette écrivain célèbre.
The collection consists primarily of the paintings of Scheffer, but also of Eugene Delacroix and other lesser-known Romantic painters and sculptors. Frankly, the art of this period doesn’t interest me much. More to my liking are the 3 (out of 8) rooms dedicated to the writer George Sand. Sand was a friend and neighbor who visited the house frequently, often with her good friend Frederic Chopin. One room replicates the drawing room at Sand’s country estate in Nohant and includes portraits of her ancestors, family jewelry, quill pens and paper cutters, and, curiously, plaster casts of Sand’s right arm (described as “sensuous”) and Chopin’s “delicate” left hand.

Mais tous qui visite ce musée remarque du jolie jardin et salle de thé où on peut s’assoir et boire un café ou thé et peut-être manger du gâteau, sandwich ou salade. C’est un milieu calme, charmant et gentil.
But all agree that the real highlight of the museum is the delightful little garden and tea room (in the greenhouse) where one can sit and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, or, if so inclined, a sandwich, salad or sweet. It’s a peaceful, charming and delightful…a hidden garden in Paris!
